Our Mission

HARLEY RRAM HOSPITAL is a super-specialty, secondary care hospital serving Madurai and surrounding areas since 1920. Founded by Dr. Harley, the hospital is located near the railway junction and Periyar Bus Stand, covering 18,000 square feet with ample parking space.

We offer innovative treatments and minimally invasive procedures, providing the highest quality care. Our Urology Department operates 24/7, staffed by qualified specialists. Outpatient services are available Monday to Saturday, 8:30 AM to 7:00 PM, and Sunday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Appointments are recommended.

Family Planning Services: As an approved family planning center, every patient who delivers or undergoes MTP at Harley RRam adopts a suitable spacing method or permanent sterilization after counseling.

Laparoscopy & Endoscopy Services: Our full-fledged scopy center, managed by Dr. V. Ramesh, M.S., M.Ch., and Dr. R. Venkat Karthey, offers diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in genito-urinary laparoscopy, cysto-ureteroscopy, and specialties like pediatric urology, andrology, and gyno-urology.

Inpatient Services: The hospital offers round-the-clock care with post-operative critical care facilities.

History of Harley Rram Hospital

1920

A Legacy of Over 100 Years

Founded on July 4, 1919, Harley Rram Hospital has a rich heritage of medical excellence and community service. Its establishment coincided with American Independence Day, marking a symbolic beginning for a vision of healthcare for all. The hospital was founded by Dr. Harley, the Chief Physician of Erskine Hospital in Madurai, and Dr. Ramasubramanian, a compassionate physician committed to serving the poor and middle-class communities. Their collaboration led to the opening of the hospital on Krishna Rayar Teppakulath Street, laying the foundation for a century of dedicated service.

The Veda School Connection:
Interestingly, the rear portion of the hospital was once home to a Veda school, a reminder of its connection to the community’s educational and cultural roots. While the timeline of the school’s closure remains uncertain, this history adds a unique dimension to the hospital’s story.

Generations of Dedication

In 1980, Dr. P.R. Krishnan Narayanan, the son of Dr. Ramasubramanian, penned a heartfelt letter reflecting on the unwavering commitment of his father and Dr. Harley. This letter, displayed proudly on the hospital’s notice board, highlights their mission to provide accessible general medical care to underserved communities.

The hospital’s growth continued under the stewardship of Dr. Ramachandran, a dedicated student of Dr. Ramasubramanian. From 1949 to 1969, he served as the Chief Surgeon at Erskine Hospital, with support from Dr. Venkatasamy, MS., FRIS, who later became the hospital’s driving force.

Leadership and Expansion

In 1970, Dr. Venkatasamy assumed leadership upon Dr. Ramachandran’s retirement. Under his guidance, Harley Rram Hospital flourished, balancing his role as a trusted family doctor and surgical specialist. His vision enabled the hospital to adapt to changing medical needs while maintaining its focus on quality care.

Since 1983, Harley Rram Hospital has expanded its services to include kidney surgery, obstetrics, women’s health, and pediatric care, reflecting its dedication to comprehensive healthcare.

A Tribute to Four Pillars of Excellence

The hospital owes its current stature to the contributions of four remarkable individuals—Dr. Harley, Dr. Ramasubramanian, Dr. Ramachandran, and Dr. Venkatasamy. Their collective efforts have shaped Harley Rram Hospital into a respected institution, continuing to uphold its mission of care, compassion, and excellence.

Born on 4th July 1921 at Cumbum, Theni District in middle class agriculture family.

EDUCATION

  • He had Elementary Education at Cumbum.

  • Middle School at Madurai and Kamuthi Board High School.

  • High School at Rajapalayam.

  • Intermediate at American College joined Madurai Medical College at 1940.

  • Started Private Medical Practice in 1948 at Madurai appointed as Honorary Assistant Surgeon in 1949 at Erskine Hospital.

 

  • In 50’s there was a Government order that any Medical Practitioner working in a recognized District Head Quarters Hospital for more than five years other in Medicine or Surgery, can register for PG course.

  • I took the opportunity of that Government order as Private Candidate registered myself for M.S at Madras university in 1956, Madurai Medical College came in 1954.

  • In 1963 I was appointed as Honorary Surgeon at Erskine Hospital and Honorary Professor at Madurai Medical College.
